Tonight at the bar, I had a new trick. Emmanuel had made a suit of chains for me to wear and then escape from. It went well, but I still wasn't getting the turnout from the audience that I wanted. Part of it was because I was still performing at the bar, but Emmanuel also had a hunch that it was because I didn't have an assistant. People like to stare at pretty girls during a magic act. I figured he was probably right since the majority of the audience was made of males. For some reason, women were few and far between in the audience. I guessed that they preferred the lighter types of magic, and maybe my act was too dark for most of them to enjoy. There were always a few women I saw, but never as many as men. After the show, a blonde woman with purple highlights in her hair walked over to me as I was packing up my things.
"Hey, I liked your show tonight."
"Really? Thank you. Most women don't, at least I don't think they do. It's too intense or something."
"I can be intense, Hunter."
I finished closing the latches on one of my trunks, and took a glimpse of this woman standing in front of me. It caught me off guard that she called me Hunter because that was my stage name, and my whole life, everyone had called me Patrick. I didn't particularly like her calling me that, but I also didn't stop her. Truth be told, I wasn't interested, so I didn't feel like it was necessary to tell her I disliked it, since I'd probably never see her again after this. Despite my annoyance, I did notice her lavender colored eyes that matched the highlights in her hair.
"Is that right, Miss?"
"Ephemera. My name is Ephemera Wallace."
"It's nice to meet you, I'm Patrick-"
"I know who you are, Hunter."
"Right."
I looked down shyly, feeling kind of stupid. Obviously she knew who I was, I was a celebrity in this town. I was still unsure if Ephemera was trying to hit on me earlier or if she was just an admiring fan. Ephemera crossed one arm over the other and continued to linger around me.
"So, what does a lady have to do to get a guy to buy her a drink around here?"
Ephemera's red lips turned upward into a smile as she asked me that question. That was the cue I was looking for, happy that she was finally telling me what she wanted from me.
"What's your poison, Ephemera?"
"A Captain and Coke would be fabulous, Hunter."
I headed over to the bar to get her and myself a drink. Emmanuel caught my eye and we silently communicated with each other. He would pack up the car and bring the equipment back to my house. I nodded my head towards him, and he did in response as well, before stepping out of the bar with the equipment in tow. As I turned my attention back to Ephemera, she had found herself a table and was sitting patiently at it, glancing in my direction. I found myself finally checking her out. She was definitely beautiful. I've never felt like I was the type to seek out love, I'm fine with my life the way things are. I don't feel like anything's missing in my life because I'm not dating. I've had some one night stands, but nothing serious. I found myself wondering what Ephemera wanted from me, did she want some fun for just tonight, or did she want a relationship?
"Patrick."
The bartender jarred me from my thoughts, handing me the two drinks I'd ordered. I smiled at her and took the drinks, walking over to Ephemera. I sat down with her and took a swig of my scotch.
"Nervous, huh?"
I nodded, and looked into my glass. I didn't know what to think of Ephemera and I didn't really know where to start. My dad had always been the smooth talker, not me. Apparently I hadn't inherited that part of his personality. Ephemera seemed too forceful for my taste, at least upon first impression. I decided not to write her off completely, since she was nice, and also nice to look at.
"Um, so what did you think of the show?"
"Honestly? I think you need an assistant. I mean, honey, you and your engineer are excellent eye candy, but you need pizzazz in your act. You're great at the illusions, but it's clunky. He's good at helping you get ready for it, but I think I could help. I worked as an assistant before, and it doesn't take much on my part, I just help you get ready for things, and take things away when you need to move on to the next illusion. You can tell me as little or as much as you want about the trick. Promise. I'm not here to screw you over."
Ephemera's words took me by surprise. I didn't think she was trying to apply for a job as my assistant, I had truthfully thought she was trying to flirt with me or something. I was secretly happy though, that she hadn't been trying to start a relationship or ask me out. I don't know how I would have reacted to those things.
"You know I'm going to have to discuss this with Emmanuel first before I give you an answer, right?"
"Of course. No worries. Thanks for the drink, Hunter."
With that, Ephemera finished the rest of her drink, put the glass down on the table, and walked out of the bar. I watched her ass as she sauntered away from me, the door closing behind her before I realized she hadn't given me her phone number or any other way to contact her. Shit.

Loved the update! I wonder if Ephemera will be just an assistant or if it will turn into something more...
ReplyDeleteHmm... I wonder about her too... she's mysterious. Thanks for reading and commenting! =)
DeleteWhy is he so damn hot??!! urgh, argh ugh!!
ReplyDeleteI love her name though. Hire her Patrick...
LOL, would you rather he be fugly? I wouldn't. XD Enjoy staring at him and his sexiness. Well thank you for the compliment and for reading and commenting. =)
Deletei think those two would make a cute couple but how could you forget to get her number patrick!
ReplyDeletePatrick isn't looking for love, so he didn't think about getting her number. He's a bit awkward in the relationship department. Thanks for reading and commenting! =)
DeleteI think Hunt- er, Patrick ;) and Ephemera would make an insteresting couple, but I defiantly want to see how their assistant/magician relationship goes first.
ReplyDeletePatrick isn't looking for love, LOL, so there won't be any romance for a little while. Ephemera is... interesting. She is mostly business, you'll just have to wait to see how her personality evolves throughout the generation. Their professional relationship will definitely be discussed first.
DeleteHmm... this left me feeling a bit... ya know, blank. I had all those in my mind I don't think I can put them all on here. I feel a bit mind-blown. I like her name, but I have this suspicious feeling about her. It sounds like she's all business.
ReplyDeleteHi! Ephemera is a wierd lady, a bit mysterious, and she's very forthcoming about what she wants, as well as blunt about what she thought Patrick's show was lacking. You are right that she is very much business oriented.
DeleteI think I am getting paranoid... for some reason, I have a strong feeling the Ephemera is working for another illusionist and wants to steal his tricks o.O
ReplyDeleteLOL. Patrick is famous by association, since Max was famous, not because he's a super famous magician. He's not quite to the level where other illusionists try to steal tricks from him, they still think he's sub-par and his tricks are boring.
Delete>:D You must be attuned to my writing then, since you're paranoid about things already. You should be paranoid about Ephemera, just not for the reasons you stated above. XD
Have to say it Relationship time :)
ReplyDeleteLoved it :)
LOL, Lckygrl. Patrick doesn't think it's relationship time just yet, he doesn't like her much at this point past possibly getting an assistant. ROFL.
DeleteEphemera, ooh what a pretty name, so mysterious. She's also pretty hot to look at. I wonder if she's a possible love interest for Patrick :) Awesome chapter, but they always are!!! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks. Hmm, you'll just have to wait to see if she becomes more than just a hot blonde stranger. =) For now, Patrick's not looking for love at the moment, and he didn't really like his first impression of her, haha, he thought she was a little pushy.
DeleteoOOoooo I wonder if this is going to be his new woman, or if other girls are in the future.. Well, of course there are going to be more girls in Patrick's future. Look at him. LOL
ReplyDeleteToo bad he forgot to get her number, though I don't think this is the last time hes going to see her ;)
Haha, there will definitely be more girls in his future. Whether Ephemera is one of them or not remains to be determined. LOL yeah, she may or may not have intentionally left without leaving her number, or getting his, because she wanted to leave him thinking about her. It worked. XD
DeleteAHAHA I forgot to finish it before I posted!!!
ReplyDeleteDon't you worry 'Hunter', if she really wants the job, she'll be in touch. I think it's adorable that he doesn't like being called by his stage name. That should say something about it - I think ;)
Either way, I don't like her. I don't like her even an itsy bitsy bit. She's manipulative, pushy, and insufferably self-confident. I don't like how she talked down to him, I don't like how conveniently she's shown up, and I don't like how she operates. I don't care if she would make adorable babies, she can stay outside that door :/ (<= that's me scowling at her. I need a better "glare" emoticon.)
LOL, aww, well I'm happy you figured out the technical difficulties and managed to post all of your thoughts. =)
DeleteHmm, he doesn't like being called by his stage name because he sees it as the persona he tries to create when he's putting on a show. He wants to remain genuine and down to earth, even when he does get famous eventually, and he feels like he shouldn't get too wrapped up in wanting to be The Hunter. I hope that makes sense. XD
Your concerns about her are very insightful. I won't say either way if you are on the right track or not, cause I'd rather you found out by reading more as I post, LOL, but you are insightful. I adore how you caught the condescension on her part in the conversation. ;) Hmm glare for an emoticon... >:[ <-- that sort of works? XD Thanks for reading and commenting.
Ahh. That makes sense. I like that he's not trying to become "the hunter". I didn't think of it, but that would be intensely insufferable - if he became some shallow showman. Totally unlike his character too :)
DeleteI will use that emoticon
>:[ "Out lady! and stay out!" lmao
I know, right? Those arrogant celebrities irritate the crap out of me, LOL. I much prefer those famous people who don't think they're better than everyone else. They're simply just doing what they love. =)
DeleteHaha, glad you found that emoticon useful. You'll probably need it throughout this generation. LOL.
Wow! She is full of herself isn't she? And if she knows so much about the business, why is she seeking out a job? You'd think she'd already have one. Don't know what to think of her yet. . .
ReplyDeletePatrick on the other hand, I really like him. He seems really down to earth. I hope his career takes off soon. :)
Yes, she is very arrogant. She doesn't' have a job at the moment because her arrogance doesn't mesh well for working with people, and they get tired of her bossiness, eventually firing her. XD
DeleteI'm happy you like Patrick. =) I like him a lot too. He has very down to earth parents, and he loved their attitude towards being famous, so he wants to be like them in that sense. He's a lot darker than his parents, but he's got a nice heart.
Wow what a sad start to your story with a suicide, but it is still full of hope and I like that. Patrick is sooo hot. I can understand why he doesn't want to get involved with someone else. Fame takes a toll on a lot of lives.
ReplyDeleteI bet Ephemera will find him. I think she has his number "wink wink" lol. I love the characters and can't wait to see more.
Hi Colorist! Welcome to my story. In case you didn't know, Maximus One: Wake Up, is the actual beginning of the story. XD This chapter you read is the second chapter of Generation 2. I know you don't have Blogger, so it was just an FYI in case you did want to read the whole story. =) Also, at the bottom of each chapter, is a "Newer Post" link, so you can click that on older chapters to go to the next chapter with ease. =D
DeleteHaha, glad you like Patrick's appearance, I love how he turned out. Patrick doesn't mind the fame that he got just because his parents are famous, and he doesn't want to ever think he's better than anyone else.
LOL, Ephemera has her ways, and she will find him again. She was playing a game and wanting to leave Patrick thinking about her since he didn't exactly jump at the chance to get to know her very well.
Thanks so much for stopping by and checking this out. I hope my explanation at the beginning of this comment made sense. =D
Cool thanks I will check out the beginning of the story.
ReplyDeleteHaha, no problem. Thanks again for reading this. =)
DeleteHmm. I don't know how I feel about Ephemera. Her mysteriousness is definitely a match for Patricks and I have the sense that he'll be bored with someone 'normal'. I need to see how their working relationship pans out first though.
ReplyDeleteI love how shy Patrick is. An endearing little quirk to his sexy personality there.
Also, speak for yourself! I personally love dark magic illusions ... that must mean I'm perfect for him ;) :P
DeleteHmm, haha, Patrick hasn't given much thought to having an actual relationship since he's very career driven, and he loves what he does. He has seen true love because that's what his parents had, so he's not turned off by love or 'normal' people, but that's just not his focus in his life at the moment. Yeah, Maximus was more extroverted, so I thought I'd do the opposite with Patrick, and make him a little introverted in his personal life. When he's on stage, he's energetic and spunky, but when he's not, he's more private and keeps to himself, only trusting a select few people like his parents and Emmanuel.
DeleteOh, haha, the scenarios I described above about the women being few and far between were generalizations, and not how I feel either. LOL. Part of me writing stuff is sometimes speculating on what I think society feels about certain things. I am one of those who enjoys dark illusions as well, and that is precisely why I chose to have Patrick be a dark magician rather than a family friendly one.
Not sure what to make of Miss Ephemera just yet. I'll have to withhold judgment for now.
ReplyDeleteHeeheehee... she's a mystery for sure. :)
DeleteEphemera...you know you're on a roll with all of the beautiful name choices you make? :) there's so much mystery behind this career and Patrick needs to be suspicious about everyone he works with. Ephemera seems pretty trust worthy but very mysterious at the same time...I feel like Emanuel set up that whole little meeting between the two of them...I don't know. She's very pretty and that could bring more attention to his tricks since his audience is mostly made up of men. Patrick and Ephemera shouldn't mess around with each other if they decide to work together.
ReplyDeleteShe seems like the type of person who is unforgiving
DeleteWell, thank you. :D I don't like naming my characters common names because I don't think they stand out as much. Yes, you're right, Patrick needs to be careful about who he trusts in this business because it's got the potential to be very dangerous as well. Ephemera was just randomly at the bar, Emmanuel's not trying to set them up. The little nod exchange he had with Patrick right before he left was just their silent communication they've developed with each other over time. Yup, that's what Ephemera was saying she could contribute to the show, her feminine wiles, LOL. For now Patrick was still unsure what was going on with her and he doesn't like how she talked to him, so he will not be jumping into a relationship with her. Hmm as for your comment about her being unforgiving, I don't want to spoil anything, but you'll find out more about her personality as the generation goes on. :)
DeleteIt took me too long to get back here, but Patrick lingered with me and I did not forget the introductory chapter.
ReplyDeleteEchoing many comments, I have to say Ephemera is another great name you have chosen, and it sounds good next to Emmanuel -- I love alliterations!
Since Patrick is known in town, he must be used to taking care when people approach him. And I wasn't expecting Ephemera to make a pass on him, since the subject of a female assistant was introduced extensively earlier. But still, he seems vulnerable to it, since he was the one considering it in first place. Though, to me, he makes the reclusive type.
And let's read on.
Hey Andante. Nice to see you again.
DeleteAww, well thank you. Heehee, I take great pride in trying to come up with names for my characters. Sometimes they are repeats, but most of the time there's at least a few who have unique names. XD
Yes, you're right, Patrick knows to try to read people as best he can when they're strangers. It's part of his personality, and it is amplified because of the industry he's in. Trust is hard to come by, and Patrick must pick and choose wisely, or be ruined forever. He's not exactly a recluse, but he's not looking to settle down long term either. He's a Natural Born Performer, and a Daredevil, so he gets a thrill from being the center of attention, although not in a negative way. It's just that he likes performing and making the audience look at him with awe. In his personal life though, he's very mysterious and keeps to himself.
He liked Ephemera's job advice because to him it was yet another way he could "wow" the audience. Luckily she walked into the bar where he was performing this night, but unlucky that he didn't get any contact info.
Wooow, she is a bit forceful upon first meeting, isn't she? haha But I like that she knows exactly what she wants and goes for it; no apologies. She's a very strong and confident woman. I'm interested in find out if she wants to get closer to Patrick for himself or just for what being attached to his name will bring her. Hmmm...
ReplyDeleteI also love how thrown off balance Patrick is by her. He's not interested in a relationship, but she interests him because she's so mysterious. Then again, who wouldn't be interested in learning more about her just from all the non-information we don't yet know about her? So excited to find out what happens next between the pair. Oh, and p.s. not leaving your number? You sly fox, you. haha :)
She's very blunt, and sometimes she rubs people the wrong way, yet she's somewhat polite too, although that's a little more subtle. Yeah, she's quite mysterious right now, you'll find out what kind of assistant she wants to be later on, although she has worked for another magician before, so she has more work experience than Patrick. It's a little less about her wanting to have a famous name to jump off of.
DeletePatrick has always been a pretty introverted person, and he doesn't let people get close to him, hence the one night stands. They let him relieve tension, while also allowing him to not have to get involved. He's never met someone who's as mysterious as him, so that's part of what is so intriguing about her. IKR? She purposely did that, LOL, so that he'd think about her. She'll show up again since she wants the job but she didn't give him a way to contact her. XD
Something tells me she'll be back to get her answer. She seems just as mysterious as Hunter. Things are working out for him with people just sorta falling into his lap.
ReplyDeleteHeehee, yeah, she probably will, as long as she really wants the job, that is. Everyone is mysterious here, haha. This bar, and town, are full of people trying to break into the magic industry, or like Emmanuel, who have worked in it, so Patrick is having a lot of luck with finding co-workers. The bar especially, is a place for lots of show biz people to start out, so Patrick's in prime territory for finding people.
DeleteI don't know what to make of that girl yet there is something about her I just do not like but I can't place it yet. The fact that she left no contact information after asking for a job proved that to me that she has some kind of agenda. I guess I'll find out when she comes back.
ReplyDeleteHeehee, good, because that's the effect I wanted to leave with the reader, she's a little mysterious, but also somewhat rude, and just wierd that she didn't leave her number.
DeleteHowever, I will say that her agenda is she wants a job. She didn't leave her number as sort of a seductive way to get Patrick to remember her, like, she was hoping he'd think about her and try to find her again. Not so much in a romantic way, but like, you know when something strange happens to you, and then you can't stop thinking about it for a few days? It's like that. LOL.
She will indeed return, however. :)
